Glasgow: Lawrence Shankland named Rangers captain ahead of new season
Lawrence Shankland has been named the new captain of Rangers, a role he described as a “huge honour” and the fulfilment of a boyhood dream. The Scotland international striker takes over the armband from James Tavernier, who departed the club after 11 years. Shankland’s appointment was announced by manager Derek McInnes just hours before the news was made public.
Shankland previously served as captain for Hearts under McInnes, and both men moved to Ibrox during the summer. He expressed his pride in leading the team, noting that he has always aimed to act as a leader within the group, even before receiving the captaincy.

The new captain highlighted the importance of collective leadership within the squad. He noted the presence of experienced players like Dan Neil and Ben Godfrey, who have also served as captains at other clubs, indicating that setting examples is a shared responsibility.
Manager’s Perspective and Season Outlook
Manager Derek McInnes explained his decision to appoint Shankland, citing the striker’s proven ability to manage a dressing room during his time as captain at Hearts. McInnes also considered Shankland’s connection to the club as a Glasgow native and a lifelong supporter, understanding the expectations placed on the team this season.
McInnes had rotated the armband among several players, including Ross McCrorie, Neil, and Godfrey, during pre-season matches before making his final choice. He stressed the importance of having multiple leaders within what he described as a relatively young dressing room.
Shankland believes the squad is well-prepared for the upcoming season. He described pre-season training, which included a trip to Spain and two games at Ibrox, as beneficial. The team is reportedly eager for competitive matches to begin, with the new Premiership season kicking off on Friday night against Dundee United at Tannadice.
The match against Dundee United will be McInnes’ first competitive game as Rangers boss. Shankland expressed his anticipation for the fixture, expecting a sell-out crowd and a good away day for the fans, with the primary goal of securing a positive result.
The team finished third in the top flight last season. Shankland acknowledged the pressure that comes with being Rangers captain but remains focused on the collective goal. He stated that while lifting trophies is a dream, the team must remain grounded and focus on each game as it comes, starting with the league opener.
The Rangers fixture list for the early part of the season includes a home game against Hibernian on August 9.
