Saltburn-Norton match ‘finger-clicking’ cheating claim investigated by league
An amateur cricket match has garnered international attention following accusations of cheating, where a fielder is alleged to have clicked his fingers to influence a wicket decision. The North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League has initiated an investigation into the incident, which occurred during a second XI Division 2 game between Saltburn and Norton.
A video circulating widely on social media reportedly shows a fielder from Saltburn clicking his fingers as the ball passed Noman Shabir’s bat. The ball was then caught by wicketkeeper Josh Bowes. Following an appeal from Saltburn, the umpire gave Shabir out. The finger-clicking has been interpreted by some as an attempt to mimic the sound of the bat edging the ball, thereby misleading the umpire.
League Investigation Underway
The league confirmed that it has received a formal complaint regarding alleged incidents during the Division Two game played on Saturday. A full investigation has been launched, and the league stated that no further comments would be made until the formal processes are concluded. The original video of the incident has accumulated over three million views on X, with news outlets in countries such as Australia and New Zealand also reporting on the story.
The footage of the alleged incident, which took place on Saturday, has gone viral, with the clip nearing five million views by Tuesday lunchtime. Users online have suggested that the fielder, positioned at slip, made a clicking sound with his fingers as the ball went past the opposing batter’s bat. This action is believed to have been an attempt to imitate the sound of an edge, potentially influencing the umpire’s decision.
The clip shows Saltburn’s wicketkeeper making the catch behind the stumps, followed by an appeal from the team. The umpire subsequently gave the batter out. In response to the circulating video and the accusations, the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League confirmed it has opened an investigation into the matter.
Team Performance and Prior Incidents
Saltburn currently holds the top position in the Division 2 league table, leading by 17 points. The team has won 10 of their 15 matches this season. In the match under investigation, Saltburn secured a victory by 159 runs. The team’s wicketkeeper, Josh Bowes, leads the league standings with 31 catches, which is 10 more than any other player in the league.
Earlier in July, Bowes notably took eight catches in Saltburn’s 22-run win against Shildon Railway. This performance surpassed the men’s Test record for catches by a wicketkeeper in a single innings, which stands at seven. Bowes’ total fielding dismissals for the season stand at 34, with 31 of those coming from catches behind the stumps.
Following the emergence of the video on social media, Rory Cotterill, who captained Middlesbrough second XI during a 29-run defeat by Saltburn in June, responded to a social media post containing the video. Cotterill alleged that two additional incidents of cheating by Saltburn occurred during that match. The league and Saltburn have been contacted for comment regarding the ongoing investigation.
