Manchester City have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for the transfer of midfielder Elliot Anderson. The deal is understood to be worth £116m, a figure that would set a new transfer record for City and make Anderson the most expensive British player in history. However, some sources connected to Nottingham Forest have suggested the deal is valued at £130m.

Forest has granted Anderson permission to undergo a medical examination. The timing of this medical is currently under discussion, as Anderson is with England at the World Cup in the USA, where the team is scheduled to play Panama in their final Group L match on Saturday.

Personal terms between Anderson and Manchester City are not anticipated to pose any issues. City had an initial offer for Anderson rejected by Nottingham Forest earlier in June.

Anderson’s Impact and Future Role

Anderson, who is 23 years old, is currently under contract with the Midlands club until 2029. He has been identified as Manchester City’s primary midfield target this summer. He emerged as a top central midfielder in the Premier League last season and is considered among elite midfield options available in the market this summer.

England teammate Jarell Quansah echoed this sentiment, stating that Anderson is fully focused on winning the World Cup. Quansah described Anderson as a “proper focused young lad” who he believes will reach the top. Anderson has played a key role for England, starting in their two group games against Croatia and Ghana.

Anderson’s versatility has been highlighted, with observations noting his ability to play as a single pivot or alongside players like Declan Rice. He is known for his capacity to break lines, press, and win duels, making him an all-action midfielder who can also score goals.

This versatility is seen as a significant asset for Manchester City, particularly with Bernardo Silva’s expected departure this summer and ongoing speculation regarding Rodri’s future. Anderson is considered a player who can either complement or replace Rodri, given his talent.

Nottingham Forest’s Midfield Plans

Should Anderson’s move to Manchester City proceed, Nottingham Forest is looking to sign two central midfielders to bolster their squad. The club’s initial plan was to add one new midfield option, but with Anderson’s transfer progressing, they now aim to bring in two players for the position.

Forest has expressed interest in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall and Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi, who Inter Milan reportedly values at approximately €30m (£25.9m). Additionally, Forest has a long-standing interest in Celtic’s Arne Engels, whom they attempted to sign in January.

Meanwhile, Manchester United had previously withdrawn from the race to sign Anderson due to the financial demands involved. United CEO Omar Berrada emphasized the club’s commitment to financial discipline in the transfer market, stating they would move away from targets if the costs were not deemed sensible.

United reportedly considered Mateus Fernandes as an alternative, with his performance data from last season comparing favorably to Anderson’s in certain areas. However, Tottenham has also shown interest in Fernandes, with West Ham reportedly seeking a fee for the player. This situation could test United’s disciplined approach to transfers.

England manager Thomas Tuchel faces decisions this weekend regarding player protection and securing the top spot in Group L. England is largely assured of a place in the round of 32 but must match or surpass Ghana’s result against Croatia to win the group. Declan Rice is being assessed after leaving Gillette Stadium on Tuesday with an apparent injury, and Reece James is a significant doubt, having reportedly missed training on Thursday due to a hamstring injury.

The enforced departure of back-up Tino Livramento could open an opportunity for Quansah to play at right-back. Quansah, a Bayer Leverkusen defender, described the prospect of a World Cup debut as a “massive, massive honour” and something he is ready for.
