Aston Villa confirm loan signing of Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea
Aston Villa have confirmed the loan signing of winger Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The deal is set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season and includes a conditional obligation for Villa to make the transfer permanent.
Chelsea stated that the 22-year-old’s transfer will become permanent next summer if certain criteria are met. Garnacho has already agreed to a four-year contract at Villa Park. While the specific terms of the obligation to buy clause have not been disclosed by either club, Chelsea anticipates that the conditions, such as the number of appearances Garnacho makes next season, are easily reachable, allowing them to achieve their original £43m valuation.
Garnacho’s move and club finances
Garnacho’s departure from Stamford Bridge comes after Chelsea’s recent acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Villa for a reported record fee of £117m. Villa head coach Unai Emery expressed his satisfaction with Garnacho’s arrival, stating he was “delighted” and highlighting the player’s talent and desire to contribute to the club’s project.
This signing marks Garnacho as Villa’s fourth addition this summer, following the arrivals of Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Keba Cisse. Meanwhile, Villa’s player sales this summer have reportedly totalled nearly £200m, with players such as Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea, and Lewis Dobbin all having departed.
Chelsea had been looking to offload Garnacho despite signing him in September for £40m from Manchester United, who are due 10% of any eventual transfer fee. His impact at Stamford Bridge was limited to one Premier League goal, and the arrivals of Rogers and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda increased the need to reduce the squad size. Garnacho was also informed he was not guaranteed regular playing time under Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso.
Emery has shown faith in the eight-cap Argentina international as he aims to rebuild his squad. The deal, structured as an initial loan with an obligation to buy, provides Villa with financial control, which is important given the club’s need to manage finances in line with Premier League and Uefa’s financial fair play rules. Villa had previously received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from Uefa for a “significant breach” of squad-cost rules for 2025.
Player performance and future prospects
Garnacho’s performance at Chelsea saw him score one goal and provide four assists in 24 Premier League games last season, or eight goals in 43 appearances across all competitions. His previous record at Manchester United included eight assists and 16 goals in 93 games.
Emery sought a pacy winger, and Garnacho, who also attracted interest from Roma, presented an opportunity. Should the move become permanent, it would represent a different outcome for Garnacho compared to other attackers who have been on loan at Villa, such as Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Harvey Elliott, who had varying degrees of success during their temporary spells.
Garnacho did not report for pre-season duty with Chelsea, as pre-arranged, while his departure was being finalised. He missed out on this summer’s World Cup after being named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection.
The deal for Garnacho continues a series of transfers between Villa and Chelsea, including the £117m transfer of Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge earlier this week. Other notable transfers between the clubs include Carney Chukwuemeka’s and Omari Kellyman’s sales to Chelsea in 2022 and 2024, Ian Maatsen moving in the reverse direction in 2024, and Axel Disasi’s loan to Villa in 2025.
Youri Tielemans has also left Villa for Manchester United this month after his £35m release clause was triggered.
