Four individuals have been arrested in connection with violent disorder that occurred on Edgware Road in central London following France‘s 2-0 victory over Morocco in a World Cup quarter-final match. The incident, which took place on Thursday evening, resulted in a police officer sustaining head injuries.
Authorities were initially called to Edgware Road due to a large gathering that was obstructing traffic. The situation escalated when individuals within the group began throwing bottles and setting off fireworks. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that an officer was transported to hospital with head injuries, believed to have been caused by a glass bottle.

The unrest in parts of London on Thursday night appeared to stem from Morocco‘s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. France secured a 2-0 win, ending Morocco‘s run in the tournament. This marked Morocco‘s second consecutive elimination from the World Cup at the quarter-final stage.
Footage circulating on social media showed fireworks being discharged as police officers, equipped with riot gear, responded to the scene. Images and videos from Edgware Road depicted clashes between police and large crowds, with smoke visible and debris scattered across the roadway. Riot police, wearing shields and body armour, were observed attempting to control the crowds amidst the launching of fireworks and throwing of various objects.
One video appeared to show an officer on the ground, though the specifics of the injury and how it occurred were not immediately known. Despite the disorder, no other injuries were reported from the incident. The group eventually dispersed, and Edgware Road was reopened to traffic from approximately 01:00 BST.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that such disorder on the streets and attacks on officers would not be tolerated. The force indicated that it would be reviewing CCTV footage and videos shared on social media to identify and bring to justice all those responsible for the events.

Paul Swaddle, leader of Westminster City Council, condemned the behaviour witnessed on Edgware Road. He urged World Cup fans to maintain respectful conduct throughout the remainder of the tournament. The incident in London contrasted with scenes in Paris, where supporters of both France and Morocco were seen celebrating, causing traffic delays in several areas of the city, including the Avenue des Champs-Élysées.
Similar scenes of public unrest had previously unfolded after Egypt‘s exit from the World Cup, following a 3-2 victory by Argentina that involved several disputed officiating decisions. The concern about potential riots in Paris, particularly after the chaos that followed Paris Saint-Germain‘s UEFA Champions League victory over Arsenal in May, did not materialise in the same way as the events in London.
In the match itself, France‘s Kylian Mbappé scored his eighth goal of this World Cup, placing him alongside Argentina‘s Lionel Messi for the most goals in the tournament. Ousmane Dembélé also contributed to France‘s 2-0 victory by scoring in the second half. This win marked France‘s third consecutive appearance in the World Cup semi-finals.
For Morocco, despite the loss, their performance in the tournament added to their World Cup history. After becoming the first African nation to reach both the quarter-finals and semi-finals in the 2022 World Cup, they further distinguished themselves by becoming the first African country to reach more than one quarter-final.
