By Amelia Stockwell — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

LeBron James has expressed gratitude to the Los Angeles Lakers as he prepares for free agency, which opens later on Tuesday. The move signals a potential departure from the team he joined in 2018, having spent the last eight seasons with them. The Lakers, in turn, wished James well, acknowledging his contributions to the franchise.

In a social media post, James responded to the Lakers’ farewell message, stating, “No, THANK YOU! Truly an honor to wear the [Lakers colours] while trying to continue the greatness & legacies that came before me! Hope I made a few proud during my stint.” This exchange follows reports that James has informed the team of his intention to continue his NBA career elsewhere.

Jeanie Buss, part of the Lakers’ ownership group, praised James as “one of the greatest athletes in history.” She highlighted his eight years with the team, including the 2020 NBA title he led them to “under the toughest imaginable circumstances,” and the numerous records he broke. Buss added that James “will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.”

A distinguished career with the Lakers

During his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James secured an NBA championship in 2020. This achievement marked a significant moment for the team, especially given the challenging conditions of that season. James’s time with the Lakers followed two separate stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and four years with the Miami Heat, where he also achieved considerable success.

James, a four-time NBA champion and the league’s all-time leading scorer, continued to perform at an elite level throughout his time with the Lakers. His longevity in the sport is notable, as evidenced by his league-record 22nd consecutive All-Star selection last February. In March, he surpassed Robert Parish‘s record for most career regular-season games played, further cementing his place in NBA history.

A testament to his enduring presence in the league, James and his son, Bronny, made history in October 2024 by becoming the first father-son duo to play together in a regular-season NBA game. This fulfilled a long-held personal goal for James, who has been a 22-time All-Star, claiming the honour every year from 2005 to 2026.

LeBron James is a 22-time All-Star.Photograph: Mark J Terrill Credit: theguardian.com

His career accolades also include being named league MVP four times, a total surpassed only by Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. James’s remarkable career has seen him accumulate numerous NBA records, including most minutes played, most points scored, and most All-Star appearances.

Future prospects and team considerations

As LeBron James enters free agency, speculation surrounds his next destination. Reports on Monday indicated that the Golden State Warriors are considering signing James, which could lead to a union with his former rivals Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. James had previously battled these players in the NBA finals for four consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2018 while with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Warriors are also reportedly looking into signing Anthony Davis. Draymond Green has not exercised his option for the upcoming season, a decision that is largely understood to provide his team with flexibility for roster adjustments. Green commented on his decision, stating, “Personally, I’m always willing to work with the team on whatever is best, especially at this point in my career.” He added that his decision to opt out was for several reasons and that he has always taken an approach of working with the organisation, which he views as family after 14 years.

Sources suggest that the Lakers’ approach to team-building conversations with outside parties did not frequently include James’s name. For the Lakers, James’s departure represents a significant cap number coming off their books, which could provide a pathway for them to reconstruct their roster around players like Dončić and Reaves. The free agency negotiation window is set to open at 6pm ET on Tuesday, though players cannot officially sign with a new team until the league’s offseason moratorium is lifted on 6 July.

By Amelia Stockwell — 1 July 2026 — 4 min read

Match preparations and atmosphere

The World Cup 2026 last-32 match between Mexico and Ecuador has been delayed due to a storm. Local media reports suggested the game would commence an hour later than its original kick-off time. Despite the weather, a large crowd gathered, enjoying a light show and DJ set, contributing to an epic atmosphere at the Estadio Azteca. The sky has since cleared considerably, and the rain has eased, bringing conditions closer to being football-ready.

The referee for the match is Slavko Vinčić, a Slovenian official who previously oversaw the 2024 Uefa Champions League final. He has also officiated other matches in this tournament, including Brazil v Morocco and Jordan v Algeria. Hydration breaks, initially a point of discussion, have been confirmed as not taking place for this fixture.

Both teams have made their way onto the pitch for warm-ups. The Ecuador contingent was met with boos, while the Mexican players received a loud reception. The conditions and the wait for the match to begin appear to have intensified the atmosphere.

Mexico’s manager, Javier Aguirre, has settled on his preferred starting XI, which includes Gilberto Mora. Ecuador, on the other hand, remain unchanged from their previous victory against Germany. Moisés Caicedo has taken over as captain for La Tri, following Enner Valencia‘s decision to pass on the armband earlier in the week.

Ecuador’s complaint and team dynamics

Ecuador has lodged an official complaint with World Cup organisers regarding disruptive fan activity outside their team hotel. Reports from local media indicate that approximately 1,000 Mexico supporters engaged in a noisy ‘serenade’ in Mexico City. The fans used noisemakers, pans, and buckets while singing a Mexican folk song before police intervened.

The Ecuadorian Football Federation stated that such conduct deviates from the principles of fair play, equality, and unity that a football World Cup should embody. They added that the team would “always respond on the pitch” and expressed hope that these actions would not tarnish the football celebration between the two nations. FIFA has been contacted for comment regarding the incident.

Ecuador’s head coach, Sebastián Beccacece, an Argentinian, took over in August 2024 after Félix Sánchez departed following a Copa América quarter-final loss to Argentina. Beccacece, who has no history as a professional player, has instilled defensive discipline in the team, making them proficient in counterattacks. Under his philosophy, the team prioritises a low block, especially when defending a lead. This approach has led to criticism from some Ecuadorian media regarding a perceived lack of offensive creativity, as Ecuador were among the lowest scorers from South American teams qualifying for the World Cup. However, the team views their strong defensive unit as a source of pride.

Mexico’s football history includes participation in the first-ever World Cup match in 1930, where they lost to France. They also conceded the World Cup’s first own-goal and scored the competition’s first penalty kick in subsequent matches of that tournament. Mexico has not lost a competitive fixture at the Estadio Azteca since 2013.

The last three matches between Mexico and Ecuador have all resulted in draws, with two of them being goalless, suggesting a potentially tactical encounter.

The Mexico players take part in the delayed warm-up.Photograph: Ryan Pierse/FIFA/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Player focus and historical context

Should Mexico manage to break through Ecuador’s defence, Julian Quinones is expected to play a key role. Quinones, who was born in Colombia, arrived in Mexico in 2015 and developed his career in Liga MX. He became a naturalised Mexican citizen in 2023 and received his first national team call-up in the same year. His inclusion in the World Cup squad has prompted discussions about national identity within Mexican football.

Ecuador’s success is seen as a natural progression of their domestic game’s growth, an increase in players competing in Europe, and a productive youth system. Their squad features players such as Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo and PSG centre-back Willian Pacho.

The Estadio Azteca holds significant historical importance, having hosted a World Cup knockout match where Diego Maradona lifted the trophy. It is also recognised for its role in the inaugural unofficial women’s World Cup and for hosting Pelé and his 1970 Brazilian teammates.

Referee Slavko Vinčić.Photograph: Rob Newell/CameraSport/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

If both Mexico and England win their respective last-32 games, England will play Mexico in Mexico City.

Williams returns to Centre Court

Serena Williams made her return to Wimbledon singles play, facing Maya Joint in a match that concluded in three sets. The American tennis legend, who last played a singles match at the All England Club four years ago, received a warm reception upon her return to the grass courts where she has previously secured seven singles titles and six women’s doubles titles. Her last singles appearance at Wimbledon was a first-round loss to Harmony Tan.

The match saw Williams demonstrate her competitive spirit, saving a match point and pushing the contest to a deciding set against an opponent 24 years her junior. Despite the crowd’s support, Joint ultimately secured a 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 victory. Following the match, Williams congratulated Joint at the net and acknowledged the ovation from the crowd.

Joint expressed her disbelief and excitement in an on-court interview, stating she had not slept much the previous night and was overwhelmed by the experience. She described the court as having hosted many significant players and acknowledged Williams’ aura and legendary status. Joint, who had faced a series of WTA Tour-level losses prior to this match, delivered a strong performance, marking her first Wimbledon win.

Williams did not hold a post-match news conference, instead releasing a statement. In her statement, she conveyed her enjoyment of being back at Wimbledon, noting the amazing atmosphere and her appreciation for the moment. Her competitive return earlier this month included women’s doubles appearances at Queen’s with Victoria Mboko and in Berlin with Karolina Muchova.

A storied return to singles

The return to singles play raised questions about Williams’ physical condition after her hiatus from the sport. Her comeback made her the second oldest player to participate in the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon. In the initial set, Williams faced challenges in baseline rallies, particularly against Joint’s effective down-the-line winners. However, her performance improved as the match progressed, leading her to recover from a break down twice in the second set to force a tie-break.

At a crucial moment, Williams saved a match point with a powerful forehand winner and a 120mph serve, extending the match to a third set. This effort, however, appeared to take a toll, and she was unable to maintain the pace against the 20-year-old Joint in the final set. Joint, born in 2006, was significantly younger than Williams, who had already won seven Grand Slam titles by the time Joint was born.

The motivation for Williams’ return, as she mentioned before Queen’s, included the prospect of her daughters watching her play. Her eight-year-old daughter Olympia and nearly three-year-old Adira were present in her players’ box, alongside her husband Alexis Ohanian and sister Venus Williams. The Williams sisters are scheduled to compete together in the doubles later this week, facing Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in their first-round match, having previously won six doubles titles at Wimbledon.

The tennis landscape has evolved since Williams’ last singles match, with new players establishing themselves at the top. Despite this, the devotion of fans to Serena Williams remained evident, with many spectators holding up old photos of her as she entered the court. Her return was described by some as a moment of disbelief, given the challenge of returning to elite sport after a four-year absence, especially at her age in Grand Slam singles tennis.

The match highlighted Williams’ enduring competitive spirit, with moments such as her roar after winning four straight points from 0-40 down in the second set, a moment that resonated with the Centre Court crowd. Her ability to push Joint to deliver her best performance of the season was seen as a testament to Williams’ influence on the court. Joint, who had been low on confidence, rose to the occasion, securing a memorable victory against one of tennis’s most celebrated figures.

Serena Williams congratulates Maya Joint on her 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win.Photograph: Godfrey Pitt/Action Plus/Shutterstock Credit: theguardian.com

Williams’ career includes 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in the Open Era, and 367 singles wins at majors, also an Open Era record. Her longevity and consistency are notable, having reached 33 Grand Slam singles finals and appeared in 82 major main draws. Since 1990, she has won 73 singles titles, more than any other player. Her return to Wimbledon, a tournament she has dominated, underscores her deep connection to the event.

The buzz surrounding Williams’ comeback was significant, with fans and fellow players expressing excitement. Many players, who grew up admiring her, found the prospect of watching or even playing against her almost unbelievable. The atmosphere at Queen’s Club, where she first returned, was filled with discussions about her presence. Sabalenka, among others, noted Williams’ legendary status and inspiring presence in the sport. Williams will be back in action later this week for the doubles competition with her sister Venus.

By Reuben Castle — 30 June 2026 — 3 min read

France secured a comprehensive victory over Sweden in the World Cup round of 32, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice. The match, held in New Jersey, saw France advance to the last 16, where they are set to face Paraguay. Sweden‘s campaign in the tournament concluded with this 3-0 defeat.

The encounter showcased France‘s attacking prowess, particularly in the second half. Michael Olise delivered a standout performance, contributing two assists. His play was instrumental in breaking down a resilient Sweden defence.

First-half deadlock broken

The first half presented an interesting contest, with Sweden demonstrating a clear game plan and effective counter-attacking options. Players like Anthony Elanga and Viktor Gyökeres aimed to link up with Alexander Isak, the Liverpool striker. Isak had two shots on goal within the opening 25 minutes, but strong defending from Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba ensured neither effort troubled Mike Maignan.

Sweden‘s defence was compact and brave, making it challenging for France to find an early breakthrough. Despite numerous deft approaches, Mbappé initially resorted to long-range efforts, indicating some frustration. The turning point arrived around the half-hour mark, following a forceful drive from Adrian Rabiot that Jacob Widell Zetterström managed to turn around the post.

Following this, France created a succession of opportunities. Mbappé had a shot go over and another hit the post from close range. In the 35th minute, Olise attempted a scissor kick, which also struck Zetterström’s right post, with Ousmane Dembelé‘s follow-up going over the bar. Olise then had another shot from distance saved by Zetterström, leading to a corner.

The breakthrough came from this corner. Dembelé played it short to Olise, who returned the pass. Dembelé then quickly passed to Mbappé inside the box. Despite a difficult angle and several defenders, Mbappé managed to bend a shot past Zetterström, putting France ahead just before half-time.

Kylian Mbappé celebrates after slotting home France’s third goal in a dominant display.Photograph: Al Bello/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Second-half dominance

France extended their lead eight minutes into the second half. The move began after Sweden lost possession following some good defensive work. Aurélien Tchouaméni seized the ball and passed it to Olise, who delivered a perfectly weighted pass between a Swedish centre-half and full-back. This allowed Bradley Barcola to stride into the box and score, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

France’s Bradley Barcola thumps home their second goal.Photograph: John Sibley Credit: theguardian.com

Olise continued to be a central figure in France‘s attacking play throughout the second half. He moved across the forward line, dropped deep, and made runs beyond defenders, consistently seeking the ball to create danger. On the hour mark, he had another attempt from outside the box, forcing a sprawling save from Zetterström. His mesmerising passing triangle with Rabiot and Koundé on the halfway line also stood out, showcasing intricate footwork and precise ball control.

With 15 minutes remaining, Olise provided his second assist of the match, leading to Mbappé‘s second goal. This goal was a result of another deft pass from Olise and a perfectly timed run from Mbappé, who curled the ball into the far side of the goal. This confirmed France‘s dominant display and secured their progression in the tournament.

Alexander Isak, who started for Sweden, played 89 minutes of the match in New Jersey.

Serena Williams experienced a first-round defeat in her return to singles tennis at Wimbledon, falling to Australian youngster Maya Joint. The match concluded with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 on Centre Court. This marked Williams’ first professional singles match since 2022, when she stepped away from tennis.

Despite saving a match point in the second set and forcing a decider, the 44-year-old showed glimpses of her past form but ultimately ran out of momentum. This loss represents her third consecutive first-round exit at the All England Club, having faced similar outcomes in 2021 and four years prior.

Joint’s Performance and Williams’ Return

Maya Joint expressed her nervousness about the match. The 20-year-old stated, “I didn’t get much sleep last night, I was up until 2:00 am last night just thinking about it.” She acknowledged that Williams raised her level when Joint was trying to close out the match.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, announced her return to the sport earlier this month and had participated in two doubles matches leading up to Wimbledon. Her appearance made her the second-oldest player to feature in th…

The crowd offered a strong reception to Williams as she entered the court, with supporters holding signs such as “Welcome Back” and wearing T-shirts that read “Unstoppable Queen.” Despite the enthusiastic support and a standing ovation, the crowd could not propel her to victory, even after her second-set win sparked rapturous celebrations.

Williams won her last of seven Wimbledon titles a decade ago, and her most recent Grand Slam triumph occurred at the 2017 Australian Open. Joint will now advance to face Filipina player Alexandra Eala, the 29th seed, who secured her first Wimbledon win against Renata Zarazua.

In other matches, reigning champion Iga Swiatek overcame a second-set challenge to defeat Taylor Townsend 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Swiatek, the third seed, made 16 unforced errors in the second set but managed to win the decider. She will face former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the second round on Thursday.

Second seed Elena Rybakina also had a tough match, battling past Lois Boisson in three sets. Amanda Anisimova, who was a finalist last year, began her campaign with a straight-sets victory over Lina Gjorcheska.

On the men’s side, French Open champion Alexander Zverev progressed after a challenging first-round match against Alexander Blockx, winning 6-4, 6-7 (8/10), 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/0). However, fourth seed Ben Shelton was eliminated by Otto Virtanen, losing in a fifth-set tie-break. American sixth seed Taylor Fritz and fifth seed Alex de Minaur both advanced in straight sets.

Following her singles exit, Serena Williams will now focus on the women’s doubles competition, where she is set to compete alongside her 46-year-old sister, Venus Williams, aiming for a seventh Wimbledon women’s doubles title.

A Memorable Night on Centre Court

The night on Centre Court was described as one of the most remarkable in the tournament’s history, with the match starting around 7:30 p.m. local time. The atmosphere was charged, resembling a final more than a first-round encounter. Williams’ return, after a four-year absence from singles, generated significant anticipation.

Despite the loss, Williams demonstrated her competitive spirit, particularly when she saved a match point in the second-set tiebreak. The roar from the crowd when she forced a decider was immense, reflecting the deep admiration for the athlete. Her serve, a hallmark of her career, showed little loss of potency, with serves recorded at 123 mph and an ace at 121 mph.

Maya Joint showed impressive composure throughout the match, despite facing a legend of the sport. She managed to fend off early break points and secured the first set in 36 minutes. While Williams managed to break back and gain momentum at times, Joint’s ability to sustain her performance ultimately led to her victory.

Her next confirmed engagement is the doubles match with her sister, Venus Williams.

By Lewis Hartnell — 30 June 2026 — 3 min read

Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Mateus Fernandes, the Portugal midfielder from West Ham United, in a deal valued at £85m. This transfer fee is guaranteed and does not include any add-ons. The move sees Tottenham secure a key target, outcompeting Manchester United, who were also interested in the player but were unwilling to match the agreed fee.

The £85m figure represents a new transfer record for Tottenham, surpassing the £65m they paid for Dominic Solanke. Fernandes has been granted permission to undergo his medical examination with Spurs.

Competition for Fernandes

Manchester United had been actively pursuing Fernandes, but their approach was guided by a policy of acquiring players at what they considered to be the correct valuation and who genuinely desired to play for the club. Throughout the negotiation process, the player’s clear preference regarding his next club was not apparent to Manchester United.

Tottenham, however, demonstrated a strong determination to secure Fernandes, reportedly prepared to match any offer made by Manchester United. Ultimately, United chose not to meet the £85m valuation set by Spurs for the midfielder.

Decision-makers at West Ham view Fernandes as one of the standout young talents in the Premier League from the previous season, believing he possesses the potential to reach the calibre of Declan Rice, who was transferred to Arsenal for £105m in 2023.

West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes is set for medical after Spurs beat Man Utd to £85m deal Credit: skysports.com

This pursuit of Fernandes follows Tottenham’s earlier attempt to sign Sandro Tonali, for whom an £80m bid was rejected by Newcastle. Tonali had recently extended his contract with Newcastle, committing to the club for another four years after a period of suspension.

Tottenham’s Transfer Activity

Tottenham has been proactive in the transfer market this summer, with Fernandes joining four other new signings. Last week, the club agreed to a deal for goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who will join on a free transfer from Burnley once his contract expires on 1 July.

Martin Dubravka clapping Credit: bbc.co.uk

The Slovakia international, aged 37, is one of several defensive reinforcements. Other additions include Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, both arriving on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, and Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke, acquired from Brighton for £52m.

Fernandes has garnered significant interest this summer, with Manchester United and Paris St-Germain both showing interest, despite his involvement in consecutive Premier League relegations. His agent, Jorge Mendes, engaged in discussions with both Tottenham and Manchester United.

Manchester United’s focus remains on strengthening their central midfield. They have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson, though his arrival has been postponed due to a late call-up to the Brazil World Cup squad. United’s players are scheduled to return for pre-season training on 9 July.

Manuel Ugarte leaves the pitch after being injured during the 2026 World Cup Group H football match between Uruguay and Spain Credit: bbc.co.uk

The plan to sell Manuel Ugarte has been put on hold following a serious injury he sustained. Additionally, Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains with the club, and reports concerning the departure of midfielder Mason Mount have been dismissed.

Player Profile and Impact

Fernandes’s playing style is characterised by his strong tackling ability and high-intensity running. He was among the top Premier League midfielders for distance covered last season. While initially seen as a more advanced player, he has expressed a preference for an all-round midfield role, specifically as a number 8, which aligns with his defensive capabilities and work rate.

His former coach, Simon Rusk, noted that Fernandes’s tackling statistics were not a surprise, highlighting it as a natural strength in his game. West Ham utilised him primarily as a hybrid number 6 and number 8 in the recently concluded season, recognising his desire to play deeper and his improved game intelligence, tenacity, and endurance.

By Amelia Stockwell — 30 June 2026 — 3 min read

France prepare for Sweden challenge

France are set to play Sweden in the World Cup 2026 round of 32. The match takes place in New Jersey, where temperatures are notably high, with forecasts suggesting it could feel like 36C by kick-off. This heat could lead to hydration breaks during the game.

Didier Deschamps, the France head coach, has returned to the touchline for this match. He missed France‘s previous game against Norway to attend his mother’s funeral. His return sees four changes to the starting XI that defeated Norway 4-1. Lucas Digne, Adrien Rabiot, William Saliba, and Bradley Barcola are all included in the starting lineup, with Manu Kone, Maxence Lacroix, Desire Doue, and Theo Hernandez moving to the bench. Kylian Mbappe will captain the side.

France enters this stage having won all three of their group-stage fixtures. Their campaign began with a 3-1 victory over Senegal, followed by a 3-0 win against Iraq, and a 4-1 dispatching of Norway. Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele have been key players, each scoring four goals in the tournament so far. Their combined five World Cup goals for France mark them as one of the most prolific duos on record since 1966.

Sweden, managed by Graham Potter, qualified for the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. They secured their spot after drawing 1-1 with Japan in their final group match, with Anthony Elanga scoring in the second half. Their group stage started with a 5-1 win against Tunisia, but they then experienced a 5-1 loss to the Netherlands.

Squad updates and player focus

For Sweden, Graham Potter has made two changes from their draw against Japan, bringing in Svensson and Bergvall for Bernhardsson and Hien. The team’s attacking lineup features Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak, and Anthony Elanga. Gyokeres, Isak, and Elanga are familiar names to fans of English football.

Kylian Mbappe is a significant focus for France, having already scored 16 World Cup goals. He is pursuing the Golden Boot in this tournament. Ousmane Dembele also comes into the match in strong form, having scored a hat-trick against Norway.

The selection of Bradley Barcola in the starting XI for France is notable. Reports indicate that Arsenal are interested in the Paris St-Germain forward and plan to observe his performance in this match against Sweden. Liverpool is also believed to be tracking him. Barcola‘s contract with Paris St-Germain is set to expire in the summer of 2028.

The depth of talent in the France squad has been highlighted, with some comparing it to the Brazil teams of 1958-1970. Didier Deschamps is known for his ability to adapt his team’s system during tournaments, a pattern that appears to be continuing in this World Cup.

Path to the next round

The winner of the match between France and Sweden will face Paraguay in the last 16. Paraguay advanced after defeating Germany in a penalty shootout. This upcoming match for France would be held in Philadelphia on 4 July.

France‘s supporters have shown strong presence, with fans reportedly gathering at Brooklyn Bridge on the eve of the match. The team has overcome challenges such as storm delays in Philadelphia and the absence of their coach, Didier Deschamps, in Miami during the group stage.

Despite France being considered favourites, the round of 32 has already seen unexpected results, such as Paraguay eliminating Germany. Sweden‘s journey to this stage involved finishing third in Group F with four points, behind the Netherlands and Japan.

Stokes’ Test Career Concludes

Ben Stokes, the all-rounder, has retired from Test cricket, with his final match concluding on Sunday afternoon against New Zealand. His last appearance saw him as an opener, though he ultimately departs the Test arena having played at number seven, a position he adopted at the beginning of the New Zealand series. Stokes had previously indicated that this move was partly to allow Jamie Smith, England‘s keeper-batter, to perform optimally, noting his own approaching age.

During his final year in the sport, Stokes achieved five-wicket hauls against both India and Australia, securing 34 Test wickets at an average of 25. His batting contributions included a 14th and final hundred at Old Trafford. Despite these moments, his strike rate in the Ashes series was 37.

Stokes’ career has been marked by moments of significant impact. In 2019, he scored 135 not out at Headingley after a slow start. That same summer, he made a half-century in the World Cup final at Lord’s, followed by 34 runs off his next 17 balls. His first Test hundred came as a 22-year-old on a Waca pitch during the 2013/14 Ashes series against Mitchell Johnson.

His prime period is often identified as 2019-2020, where he was named player of the series against Australia at home and then South Africa away. During this time, Stokes maintained a Test batting average of over 50 and a bowling average under 30 over a two-year span. He also holds the record for the most Test wickets as England captain, surpassing Bob Willis, a feat achieved after undergoing hamstring surgery.

Commitment to Durham

Following his retirement from Test cricket, Ben Stokes has committed to continuing his career with Durham. Ryan Campbell, Durham‘s head coach, expressed that the club was flattered by Stokes’ positive remarks about his time with them. Stokes had previously mentioned that playing for Durham in a County Championship game against Northamptonshire, during a suspension from a Test match, had reignited his passion for the game.

Campbell and the Durham players learned of Stokes’ decision during their T20 victory over Middlesex on Sunday. The coach has since communicated with Stokes regarding his availability for Durham in the One-Day Cup, especially since he is not affiliated with a team in The Hundred. There are six rounds remaining in the County Championship, which is set to resume in August, with Durham currently leading Division Two by 32 points.

Campbell indicated that Stokes is scheduled to participate in the One-Day Cup and potentially some Championship matches. Despite some speculation about a potential return to England duty for next summer’s Ashes, Campbell believes Stokes’ international career, spanning nearly 15 years, has concluded. With over 7,000 Test runs and 258 wickets, Stokes is recognized as a significant figure in the sport.

Stokes’ focus in recent years has been entirely on the long form of the game, having not played white-ball cricket for the past two years. He will continue to play for Durham, embracing a role in county cricket. His retirement from Test cricket was announced on Sunday afternoon against New Zealand.

By Amelia Stockwell — 30 June 2026 — 4 min read

The summer transfer window continues to see significant activity across several prominent clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham. Teams are actively pursuing new signings, with a focus on strengthening midfield options.

Arsenal are reportedly aiming to bring two key midfielders to the Emirates. While Morgan Rogers is a primary target, with Aston Villa demanding £130 million for his services, the club has also explored a move for Alex Scott as an alternative. This comes after Manchester City reportedly paid £116m for Elliot Anderson. Arsenal‘s interest in Scott has been met with resistance, as Bournemouth has declined their enquiry, stating the 22-year-old is not for sale this summer. Bournemouth intends to extend Scott‘s contract, which currently has two years remaining. Arsenal has also looked into Newcastle duo Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, with Guimaraes seen as a more realistic option. Additionally, the Gunners are monitoring West Ham‘s Mateus Fernandes and Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are also active in the midfield market, reportedly nearing a deal for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. The agreement is said to make Tonali the highest-paid player in Spurs‘ history. Chelsea are working to secure Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, following an initial rejected bid. The Blues are also in discussions for Maxence Lacroix and are finalising a deal for Marco Palestra, who is expected to be Xabi Alonso‘s first signing.

Manchester United are engaged in talks to sign Mateus Fernandes, facing competition from Tottenham, and have scheduled a medical for Cristian Orozco. Maxi Araujo is also reportedly of interest to the club. Liverpool, having missed out on Yan Diomande to Paris Saint-Germain, are now looking to sign Bradley Barcola.

Key Midfield Targets and Developments

The pursuit of midfield talent is a recurring theme across the Premier League. Elliot Anderson‘s move to Manchester City has set a new benchmark for midfielder valuations. Anderson, a 23-year-old midfielder, is noted for his comprehensive playing style, often compared to players like Declan Rice and Rodri. His ability to operate effectively in various midfield roles and his consistent performance, including featuring in all but one of Forest’s league games, coming on in the other, contributed to his high valuation.

Anderson‘s journey from a loan spell at Bristol Rovers to becoming one of the most expensive British players highlights a significant rise. His former manager, Eddie Howe, described him as “the most reluctant transfer” he had ever sanctioned. Manchester City‘s acquisition of Anderson is seen as a strategic move to bolster their midfield, especially with uncertainties surrounding Rodri‘s future and recent fitness issues affecting other midfielders like Nico González and Mateo Kovacic.

Lille has set two different asking prices for 19-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. They are demanding at least £70 million, but with a condition that he be loaned back to them for the season. If a club wishes to sign Bouaddi without the loan agreement, the price increases to approximately a higher amount. Bouaddi‘s performances for Morocco at the World Cup have attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, with Arsenal reportedly leading the race, while Liverpool and Manchester City are also monitoring him.

Other Transfer Activities

Real Madrid is open to offers of around €60 million for midfielder Eduardo Camavinga this summer. Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Milan have all been linked with the player. Before any decision is made, Camavinga is expected to hold discussions with Jose Mourinho.

In other news, Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen on a reunion with Mason Mount at AC Milan. Despite Manchester United insisting the midfielder is not for sale, a move abroad could be appealing to Mount. Everton is set to make Tyrique George‘s loan from Chelsea permanent after a successful spell, with the 20-year-old having made 11 appearances for Everton last season. Additionally, Arthur Barratt, another Chelsea academy product, is expected to join George at Everton, with a fee agreed for a permanent transfer.

Marcus Rashford has reportedly shown no interest in joining Tottenham or any other English club this summer. He is expected to rejoin Manchester United for pre-season training next month. Luka Vuskovic‘s future at Tottenham is pending the conclusion of Croatia‘s World Cup campaign. The 19-year-old, who has yet to make a competitive appearance for Spurs, is reportedly determined to leave to seek first-team opportunities elsewhere and has attracted interest from Brighton and other European teams. Chelsea are also in talks to sign Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, as they look to compensate for the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid after the World Cup.

Victor Gyokeres has stated he is very content at Arsenal amidst rumours of a potential swap deal involving Julian Alvarez, ahead of Sweden‘s World Cup last-32 match against France.

By Lewis Hartnell — 30 June 2026 — 4 min read

Celebrations erupted in parts of the Netherlands following Morocco‘s dramatic victory over the Dutch national team in a World Cup last-32 tie. The match, which concluded in a penalty shootout, saw Morocco advance to the next round, sparking joyous scenes among the Moroccan community in Amsterdam. However, the atmosphere in The Hague reportedly turned confrontational, with police facing bottle and fireworks attacks.

The fixture held significant cultural weight in the Netherlands, home to approximately 440,000 people of Moroccan descent. Ahead of the game, many faced questions about which team they would support. While former manager Ron Jans openly discussed this dilemma with pundit Ibrahim Afellay on Dutch television, Afellay expressed and explained his support for Morocco. In general, reactions in the real world were often understanding, regardless of individual team preference.

The online discourse, however, presented a different picture, influenced by far-right politician Geert Wilders. Wilders, known for his past comments regarding the Moroccan community in the Netherlands, posted an AI-generated image on X depicting himself as a referee issuing a red card to a Moroccan player before the match. He later used X to congratulate Morocco on their win.

The debate surrounding social cohesion is expected to continue, yet the camaraderie observed among fans in Amsterdam highlighted a more harmonious reality compared to online interactions. In the western part of the capital, an area with a substantial Moroccan population, celebrations remained peaceful. Cafes decorated with orange flags and bars staying open contributed to the festive mood, with spectators at Het Sieraad showing support for both teams without issue. Individuals in orange shirts applauded Morocco‘s team.

Match details and player performances

The game itself was a closely contested affair. Nathan Ake started for the Dutch side in Monterrey, Mexico. The score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes, with no additional goals in extra time. Morocco, who were semi-finalists in the previous World Cup, posed a significant threat throughout the match. Achraf Hakimi, earning his cap, hit the crossbar, and Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made several crucial saves to keep the game level.

The Netherlands took the lead with 18 minutes remaining when Cody Gakpo scored. However, Issa Diop‘s powerful header in stoppage time brought the African side level. Chelsea player Jorrel Hato made his World Cup debut, coming on as a substitute for the Netherlands with four minutes left in normal time. Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders remained on the bench despite the match progressing to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, the Dutch missed three of their spot-kicks. Ismail Saibari then converted the decisive penalty, securing a 3-2 victory for Morocco and sending them into the last-16, where they are scheduled to face Canada. Brazil and Paraguay also advanced to the next round after their respective victories against Japan and Germany.

Post-match incidents and community reactions

An hour after Morocco‘s win, the Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that police in The Hague were targeted with bottles and fireworks. Regional news station Omroep West stated that at least 10 individuals, believed to be Moroccan fans, were arrested in The Hague following attacks on police. Additionally, the newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported that four Moroccan fans were arrested in Rotterdam, though the reasons for these arrests were not specified.

Police make an arrest in The Hague after the match.Photograph: ANP/Shutterstock Credit: theguardian.com

In Amsterdam, the atmosphere was markedly different. After the match, dozens of Moroccan fans drove through the streets, honking car horns and waving flags. Dutch fans were observed congratulating their opponents, exchanging hugs, and pledging their support for Morocco for the remainder of the tournament. Despite previous incidents after some Morocco games, Mercatorplein square, a known site for such occurrences, remained peaceful on this occasion, with only a few police officers deployed. The morning in Amsterdam was characterised by unbridled joy following the football match.

Morocco fans take to the streets in Amsterdam to celebrate.Photograph: Ramon van Flymen/EPA Credit: theguardian.com

Three members of Morocco‘s squad were born in the Netherlands, including Noussair Mazraoui, Sofyan Amrabat, and Anass Salah-Eddine, all of whom chose to represent Morocco. This decision has been a point of discussion, with some politicians and commentators questioning their loyalty to their country of birth. The rise of certain right-wing parties has been cited by Dutch-Moroccan players as a reason for increasingly siding with Morocco.

The victory means Morocco will progress to the last-16 stage of the World Cup.
