Genesis Scottish Open: McIlroy shares lead, Scheffler in contention
Rory McIlroy is among five golfers sharing the lead after the opening round of the Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament, co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, is being held at The Renaissance Club and serves as a final opportunity for some players to qualify for the upcoming Open Championship.
McIlroy, making his first start since the US Open, posted a five-under 65. He is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Hojgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger. McIlroy‘s round included an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys.
The course, designed by Tom Doak and constructed in 2008, is known for its links challenge and rugged terrain. Its difficulty can be influenced by coastal winds, which have led to varied winning scores in previous years, ranging from seven-under to 18-under.
Strong starts for contenders
McIlroy began his round on the back nine, bogeying his opening hole. He quickly recovered with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 12th, followed by additional shots gained at the 14th and 16th holes. Despite failing to save par at the 18th, he secured an 18-foot eagle at the par-five first hole. He then found back-to-back gains from the seventh hole.
McIlroy commented on his driving performance, noting a continuation of putting the ball in play, which he feels allows him to attack courses and create scoring opportunities. His past performances at The Renaissance Club include a win, a T2, and a T4 finish.
Cantlay completed a bogey-free round with five birdies. Wiesberger briefly held the solo lead before a bogey on his penultimate hole. Hojgaard also reached six-under before a double-bogey at the par-four 16th. He was the top performer in the afternoon wave after a birdie at the par-three 17th.
Kim rounded out the group sharing the lead with his five-under 65.
Scheffler and other notable players
Scottie Scheffler is three shots behind the leaders after carding a two-under 68, which included four birdies and two bogeys. Scheffler, who will be looking to defend his title at The Open next week, acknowledged a solid start but expressed a desire for more shots and a cleaner card, particularly regarding the bogeys and par-fives.
Brooks Koepka is among a group of seven players one shot off the pace. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are two shots back, alongside Bob MacIntyre and US Open champion Wyndham Clark. Clark is within two shots of the lead despite a double-bogey and a bogey in his first four holes.
The leaderboard is tightly contested, with 71 players separated by just five strokes after the initial round. PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai posted a one-over 71, while Jon Rahm needed two late birdies to finish with a three-over 73.
Wyndham Clark has shown strong form recently, gaining strokes per round since April 1 and securing four top-10 finishes in nine starts, including two wins. The Renaissance Club has been a favourable venue for Clark, where he has not finished worse than T25 in his four appearances.
Jake Knapp, returning from an injury, played twice since his return and showed improvement in the latter stages of the Travelers Championship. He previously finished T22 at The Renaissance Club. Nicolai Højgaard, who finished T14 at the Travelers Championship, has had four top-five finishes this year.
