Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United Future in Question as Exit Clause Expires
Marcus Rashford’s exit clause from Manchester United, valued at a reported £40 million, has expired. This development means that any potential transfer for the player will now require direct negotiation between clubs.
Rashford, who has been with England at the World Cup, is currently under contract at Old Trafford until 2028. Following the expiration of the clause, all parties involved are now open to considering approaches for the forward.
Rashford’s Recent Loan Spell and Future
Last season, Rashford was on loan at Barcelona. The Spanish club had an option to make the move permanent but ultimately chose not to. During his time at Barcelona, Rashford made 49 appearances across all competitions, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists.
His role at Barcelona is now expected to be filled by England teammate Anthony Gordon, who arrived from Newcastle United. Sources familiar with the situation have indicated that Rashford has declined other proposals, some of which were more financially attractive than his current agreement.
The exit clause was specifically structured not to be available to United’s rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool.
Return to Manchester United
Rashford is anticipated to be reintegrated into Manchester United’s squad under Michael Carrick following the World Cup. He is expected to begin the new season as part of Carrick’s team. Rashford last played for United in a Europa League victory against Viktoria Pilzen in December 2024.
Despite a reported breakdown in the relationship between the player and the club, there are no issues between Rashford and Carrick. Rashford is scheduled for a three-week break after England’s World Cup campaign before returning to United for pre-season training.
United’s preference is to manage their wage bill, but there is a reported lack of suitable interest in Rashford. After scoring in Barcelona’s victory over Real Madrid in May, which secured the La Liga title, Rashford expressed a desire to re-sign with the club. However, Barcelona signed Anthony Gordon, whose preferred position is also wide left.
United has no plans to engage with Barcelona regarding another temporary move for Rashford. His relationship with United was reportedly strained after he was substituted by then-head coach Ruben Amorim in the Pilzen match, leading to Amorim’s subsequent refusal to consider him for selection.
Carrick, who became the permanent head coach in May after initially replacing Amorim in January, guided United back into the Champions League with a third-place finish. He has expressed excitement for the upcoming season, stating the team’s capability to compete with the best and fight for available trophies.
United’s pre-season schedule includes six friendlies before the new campaign. They are set to play against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July, followed by matches against Rosenborg in Trondheim on 24 July, Atlético Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August, Paris Saint‑Germain in Gothenburg on 8 August, Leeds in Dublin on 12 August, and Milan in Wroclaw on 15 August. The Premier League season is scheduled to begin a week later with a trip to Hull.
Rashford came through United’s academy and has made over 400 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 138 goals since his debut in February 2016. The earliest Rashford could return to United, should England reach the World Cup final, would be 10 August.
Squad Reinforcements
United has reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Andrey Santos. The deal also includes a sell-on clause for the London club, and terms have been agreed with the midfielder. Santos, who can play in both holding and attacking roles, has six caps for Brazil.
Carrick’s midfield options are also expected to be strengthened by Éderson, who is in line to join from Atlanta. The player, who featured for Brazil in their defeat by Norway, is yet to complete a medical. Carrick is reportedly interested in adding a third midfielder with more established experience, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton mentioned as potential targets.
Manchester United are reportedly looking to arrange a transfer for Rashford before their pre-season training camp in Dublin in August.
