Butt’s assessment of England’s World Cup exit
Following England‘s elimination from the World Cup semi-finals, former international Nicky Butt has strongly advocated for the immediate removal of manager Thomas Tuchel. Butt’s comments came after England, despite taking a 1-0 lead through Anthony Gordon, ultimately lost to Argentina, who scored twice in the closing moments with goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez.
Butt expressed his view that there is “no way” Tuchel should remain in his position after the team’s performance. He suggested that if Tuchel were to stay, John McDermott, the FA technical director, should also be dismissed. Butt criticised Tuchel’s tactical approach, describing it as “crazy negative football” in a crucial semi-final match against an Argentina team he believed was beatable.
The former midfielder highlighted concerns about Tuchel’s perceived lack of bravery on the world stage, especially given the talent within the England squad. He argued that Tuchel’s decision to bring on defensive players like Ezri Konsa, Nico O’Reilly, and Dan Burn ultimately backfired. Tuchel, however, defended his tactics, stating that the team was too passive and lacked physicality, and that ball possession was not in England‘s “DNA” in the same way it is for Spanish or Argentinian-Brazilian teams.
Butt also suggested that Tuchel, despite his success as a club manager, might not genuinely wish to continue in the role, speculating that the manager would be thinking, “pay up, I’m out of here.”
Potential managerial candidates
In the wake of England‘s exit, the discussion has turned to who might lead the national team next. Butt identified Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola as leading candidates for the role. He noted that while Guardiola, who recently concluded a 10-year tenure at Manchester City with six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, would be an ideal choice, the timing might be problematic as he had recently stated a need for rest from football.
Howe, who has guided Newcastle to two Champions League campaigns and a League Cup triumph since 2021, was described by Butt as a “brilliant” option. Butt also mentioned Mauricio Pochettino as a strong contender, citing his existing relationship with FA technical director John McDermott from their time together at Tottenham. Pochettino recently led the USMNT to the round of 16 in the current World Cup before a 4-1 defeat to Belgium.
Building for the future
Butt also put forward a plan for England‘s long-term future, suggesting that the FA should focus on building a young team for the 2030 World Cup, even if it means sacrificing success in the upcoming Euros in 2028. He believes that the current mentality in English football development does not adequately foster winners.
As part of this strategy, Butt advocated for the immediate inclusion of Arsenal youngster Max Dowman into the England squad. He proposed that the 16-year-old midfielder should play in “every international break from now on” to gain crucial experience. Dowman, who made 13 appearances for Mikel Arteta‘s Arsenal team last season, scored a notable goal against Everton in March.
Butt’s former teammate Paul Scholes echoed this sentiment, stating that Max Dowman would “definitely be around for the next tournament.” Argentina, having defeated England, are set to face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday.
