Iran alleges unfair treatment by USA during World Cup
Logistical challenges and travel restrictions
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has stated that his nation experienced “unfair” treatment from the United States during the World Cup. He has urged Fifa to intervene in similar situations in future tournaments. The team’s participation in the World Cup has occurred against the backdrop of ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Before the tournament commenced, Iran’s training base for the World Cup was relocated from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. The team also encountered travel restrictions throughout the competition. For their initial two matches in Los Angeles, the Iran squad was permitted to enter the United States only on the day prior to the match and was required to depart on the same day as the game, in accordance with their visa terms.
Travel restrictions were eased for the match held in Seattle, allowing the team to arrive two days in advance. However, they were still required to return to Tijuana following the game. Ghalenoei expressed pride in his players, stating that their actions should be recorded in history, given the host country’s unfair treatment.
Ghalenoei commented on the team’s performance despite the challenges, noting that the world is proud of Iranians and their team. He appealed to Fifa, asking them not to permit host nations to treat players and teams in such a manner in future World Cups. Fifa president Gianni Infantino had previously remarked on the organisation’s efforts to ensure Iran‘s participation in the World Cup.
Infantino had promised that Iran would compete, despite initial doubts about their ability to attend. He also questioned who else could have ensured Iran‘s participation under circumstances that Fifa could not influence. Infantino later visited the Iran dressing room after their opening draw with New Zealand.
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi described the tournament as a “logistical disaster,” criticising Fifa and Infantino for their management of his country’s World Cup campaign. Taremi highlighted the continuous travel to Tijuana as a significant issue. He acknowledged appreciation for the people of Mexico and Tijuana but stressed that such arrangements are not appropriate for professional players in a professional competition.
Taremi also mentioned that the team’s logistics personnel were unable to obtain visas, further complicating their situation. He questioned the fairness of the arrangements, stating that despite constant complaints, no assistance was provided. Taremi recounted Infantino‘s visit to the changing room after the first match, where the Fifa president indicated it was “just the beginning,” yet the group stage was nearing its conclusion without resolution to the issues.

Match outcomes and qualification hopes
Iran drew their final Group G match 1-1 with Egypt, leaving their prospects of advancing to the last 32 uncertain. During the match against Egypt, Iran appeared to have secured an automatic spot in the knockout stage when Shoja Khalilzadeh scored in stoppage time. However, the goal was disallowed for offside after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, leading to celebrations in the stadium being cut short.
Ghalenoei reflected on the team’s fortune, noting that after three games, he observed not only oppression but also bad luck. Iran currently ranks sixth among third-placed sides, with three groups yet to conclude. The top eight teams from this category will progress to the next stage of the competition. The draw with Egypt meant Iran finished third in Group G, and their qualification for the knockout stages now depends on the results of other group games.
For Iran to be eliminated, specific outcomes in other matches would need to occur. If Algeria and Austria draw in Group J, sending both through, and if DR Congo beats Uzbekistan, and Croatia secures at least a point against Ghana, then Iran would be out of the tournament. Despite these contingencies, a live predictor tool indicates a 92 per cent chance of Iran reaching the round of 32.
