Seattle sees dramatic VAR decision as Iran’s late winner against Egypt disallowed
A dramatic late VAR decision denied Iran a guaranteed spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup, leaving their progression hanging on other results. The incident occurred during their 1-1 draw with Egypt at Seattle’s Lumen Field, a match that saw intense action and contrasting emotions for both sides.
The game unfolded with high stakes, as both teams sought to secure their place in the next round. Egypt took an early lead in the fifth minute when Mahmoud Saber’s shot found its way past Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and a defender. However, Iran quickly responded. After captain Mehdi Taremi missed a penalty, Ramin Rezaeian equalised in the 15th minute, reacting to a rebound from a Milad Mohammadi effort and scoring from a tight angle.
Late Drama and VAR Intervention
The match remained finely balanced, with news from the other Group G fixture between Belgium and New Zealand influencing the teams’ strategies. As the second half progressed, the onus shifted to Iran to push for a winning goal. The closing stages were marked by frantic play and a series of defensive efforts from Iran, including blocks and tactical fouls.
The most significant moment arrived in stoppage time when Iran defender Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score a dramatic winner. His strike prompted celebrations from the Iran squad, who believed they had secured their qualification. However, the goal was subsequently ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak confirmed the decision, which was made due to Khalilzadeh being in an offside position when a teammate’s initial effort rebounded off the Egypt goalkeeper.

The VAR image showed that at the moment the ball was played to Khalilzadeh, there was only one Egypt player between him and the goal line, making him offside according to the rules. This decision was particularly impactful as a goal would have guaranteed Iran a knockout spot.
Aftermath and Qualification Hopes
Despite the disallowed goal, Iran continued to create chances, with Saeid Ezatolahi hitting the crossbar. However, Egypt held on for the 1-1 draw, securing second place in Group G and progressing to the round of 32. Egypt will now face Australia in Dallas on July 3. Belgium, after a 5-1 victory against New Zealand, topped the group.
For Iran, the draw means they finish third in their group with three points and a goal difference of zero. Their qualification for the knockout stage now depends on the results of other group games on Saturday. They are currently positioned sixth in the third-place rankings, with the top eight third-placed teams advancing. According to one projection model, Iran has a 92 per cent chance of reaching the round of 32.
The team’s manager, Amir Ghalenoei, and his players will await the outcomes of the remaining group matches to determine if their journey in North America will continue beyond their Mexican base in Tijuana. The match itself was a physical encounter, featuring four bookings in the first half and a high level of intensity from both sides.
